Structural Engineer
A structural engineer designs and analyzes the load-bearing frameworks of buildings, bridges, and other structures, ensuring they can safely withstand gravity, wind, seismic, and other forces. Using AutoCAD and Revit for drafting and structural analysis software like SAP2000 or ETABS for calculations, they verify designs against building codes and collaborate with architects and contractors, often applying project management skills to keep work on schedule. Licensed professional engineers (PE) typically hold this role within civil engineering or construction firms.
Duties & responsibilities
- Verify structural designs meet safety requirements, building codes, and applicable industry standards through calculations and testing
- Oversee structural testing and validation activities from ground testing through flight qualification to confirm design integrity
- Apply knowledge of materials, failure modes, and manufacturing processes to support design decisions across the full development lifecycle
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute technical expertise to team decisions on critical structural components
