Pharmacy Technician
A pharmacy technician supports licensed pharmacists by processing prescriptions, preparing and labeling medications, and managing inventory in retail pharmacies, hospitals, or mail-order facilities. The job demands strong customer service skills for handling patient questions and insurance issues, fluency with pharmacy management software for order entry and billing, and strict HIPAA compliance when handling patient records. Most technicians complete a certificate program or on-the-job training and may hold national certification (CPhT), typically working under a supervising pharmacist rather than independently.
Duties & responsibilities
- Process and fill prescription orders accurately and on time for patients
- Prepare and label medications according to pharmacist instructions and regulatory standards
- Manage pharmacy inventory and maintain stock accuracy of medications and supplies
- Enter prescription and patient information into pharmacy management software systems
- Handle customer and patient inquiries regarding medications, insurance, and prescription status
- Compound sterile and non-sterile medications under pharmacist supervision following safety protocols
- Maintain HIPAA compliance and protect patient privacy when handling medical records
