Database Administrator
A Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for the installation, configuration, security, and day-to-day health of an organization's database systems, ensuring data stays available and performant. Core duties include writing SQL, managing platforms such as Oracle, SQL Server, or MySQL, performing backup and recovery, and performance tuning, with growing responsibility for cloud database platforms like AWS RDS or Azure SQL. DBAs tend to be meticulous, reliability-focused IT professionals who serve as the last line of defense against data loss or downtime.
Duties & responsibilities
- Install, configure, and maintain database systems across on-premises and cloud environments
- Monitor database performance and optimize queries, indexes, and system resources
- Perform regular backups and test recovery procedures to protect against data loss
- Manage user access, security protocols, and compliance requirements for database systems
- Diagnose and resolve database issues to minimize downtime and maintain availability
- Support application teams by tuning databases for their workload requirements
- Plan and execute database upgrades, patches, and migrations
