Occupation
Academic Counselor
An academic counselor guides students through educational planning and decision-making at schools, colleges, or universities, helping them select courses, meet graduation requirements, and plan for life after school. The role combines student advising and academic planning with career counseling and, at the secondary level, college admissions knowledge to help students navigate applications, all tracked through student information systems (SIS) to monitor progress and flag at-risk students. Most academic counselors hold a master's degree in counseling or education along with relevant certification.
