Trobriand Cricket

Trobriand cricket is a localized variant of the sport introduced to the Trobriand Islands of Papua New Guinea by missionaries in the early 20th century, later transformed by islanders into a ritualized, festival-like event. Matches feature unlimited players per side, war-dance-style chanting, elaborate body decoration, and rules modified to ensure the home team always wins, blending sport with traditional ceremony and social exchange. It is often studied as a striking example of how a colonial import can be indigenized and reshaped to fit local culture.
