Shōgi

Shōgi, often called Japanese chess, is a two-player strategy board game played on a 9x9 grid where the goal is to checkmate the opponent's king. Its distinctive 'drop' rule allows captured enemy pieces to be turned to the capturing player's side and reintroduced to the board, making it more tactically complex and less prone to draws than Western chess, and it has a large professional scene in Japan.
