Pall Mall

Pall mall (also spelled paille-maille) is a historical lawn game, popular in 16th- and 17th-century England and France, in which players used a mallet to strike a boxwood ball down an alley and through a raised iron ring or hoop at the far end in as few strokes as possible. It is considered an ancestor of both croquet and golf, and gave its name to the Pall Mall street in London, where it was once played. Today it survives mainly as a historical curiosity rather than an active pastime.
