Mesoamerican Ballgame

The Mesoamerican ballgame is an ancient team sport played by cultures such as the Maya and Aztec, in which players struck a solid rubber ball using their hips, forearms, or thighs (without hands) to send it through or against stone rings or markers on a masonry court. It held deep religious and political significance, sometimes linked to human sacrifice and mythology, and was played across Mesoamerica for over 3,000 years. Modern versions, like ulama, are still played in parts of Mexico today as a link to this pre-Columbian heritage.
