Land Speed Records

Land speed records track the fastest speed ever achieved by a wheeled vehicle traveling on land, typically measured over a set distance on salt flats (such as Bonneville) or purpose-built desert courses. The outright record is currently held by Thrust SSC, which broke the sound barrier on land in 1997 reaching over 763 mph (1,228 km/h), driven by Andy Green. Pursuing these records involves highly specialized jet- or rocket-powered vehicles and has long attracted engineers and daredevil drivers pushing the limits of speed and aerodynamics.
