Kemari

Kemari is an ancient Japanese ball game dating to the Asuka period, traditionally played by aristocrats in the imperial court, in which a circle of players kicks a deerskin ball to one another trying to keep it from touching the ground, without any goals or opposing teams. It emphasizes cooperation, grace, and skillful footwork rather than competition, and is considered a distant cultural ancestor of modern association football in Japan. It survives today mainly as a ceremonial, preserved tradition performed at Shinto shrines and cultural festivals.
