Harpastum

Harpastum was a ball game played in ancient Rome, thought to be derived from a Greek game called phaininda or episkyros. It involved two teams trying to keep possession of a small, hard ball through passing, blocking, and physical contact on a marked field, and was valued by Roman soldiers and citizens as vigorous physical exercise. Little is known in detail about its exact rules, since surviving descriptions come only from brief ancient references.
