Chovgan

Chovgan is a traditional Azerbaijani equestrian team sport similar to polo, in which riders on horseback use long mallets to strike a small ball into the opposing team's goal. It has ancient roots in the Caucasus and Central Asia and was historically played by nobility and warriors as both sport and cavalry training. In 2013, UNESCO inscribed chovgan on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognizing its cultural and historical importance to Azerbaijan.
