Z-Order

Software Development and Engineering Practices

Z-order (or Z-order curve, also called Morton order) is a space-filling curve technique used in computer science to map multidimensional data into one dimension while preserving locality, commonly applied in spatial indexing, databases, and geographic information systems. It's also used in graphics and UI programming to describe the stacking order of overlapping elements on screen (which one appears "in front"). Developers use Z-ordering to optimize spatial queries, indexing structures, and rendering layers.
