Tabla

Music and Audio Production

The tabla is a pair of hand drums central to Hindustani (North Indian) classical music, consisting of a smaller wooden drum (dayan) and a larger metal or clay drum (bayan). Played with the fingers and palms, it produces a wide range of tones and is used both as a solo instrument and as rhythmic accompaniment for vocalists, instrumentalists, and dancers. Learning tabla involves mastering bols (spoken rhythmic syllables) and complex time cycles called talas.
