It is popular among indie developers and hobbyists for prototyping and releasing 2D RPGs, with notable commercial successes like "To the Moon" and "OMORI" built using it. Versions include RPG Maker VX Ace, MV, and MZ, each adding more customization through JavaScript or Ruby scripting.
