Prompt patterns are reusable, documented templates or structures for crafting prompts to large language models, analogous to design patterns in software engineering. Examples include the persona pattern (asking the model to adopt a role), the chain-of-thought pattern (asking it to reason step by step), and the few-shot pattern (providing examples). AI practitioners use these patterns to systematically improve the reliability and quality of LLM outputs across different use cases.
