Periscope was a live video streaming mobile app launched by Twitter in 2015 that allowed users to broadcast and view real-time video streams, with viewers able to comment and send virtual hearts during broadcasts. It was popular among journalists, influencers, and everyday users for informal live broadcasting before Twitter shut it down in 2021 in favor of integrating live video directly into Twitter itself.
