Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) is a link-state routing protocol used within computer networks to determine the most efficient paths for forwarding data packets between routers. Network engineers deploy it in enterprise and service-provider networks because it scales well, converges quickly after topology changes, and supports hierarchical network design through areas. It is one of the most widely used interior gateway protocols in IP networking, standardized by the IETF.
