Materials selection is the engineering process of choosing the most appropriate material for a product or component based on criteria like mechanical properties, cost, weight, durability, and manufacturability. Engineers and industrial designers use frameworks and databases (such as Ashby charts) to compare tradeoffs between candidate materials before finalizing a design.
