LGPD Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados

Legal and Compliance

The LGPD (Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados) is Brazil's comprehensive data protection law, enacted in 2018 and enforced starting 2020, which regulates how organizations collect, process, and store personal data of individuals in Brazil. Modeled closely on the EU's GDPR, it establishes individual rights over personal data, obligations for companies, and an enforcement authority (the ANPD) with power to issue fines for noncompliance. Privacy officers, compliance teams, and legal professionals working with Brazilian markets must understand and implement its requirements.
