ICD coding refers to the use of the International Classification of Diseases system to assign standardized alphanumeric codes to diagnoses, symptoms, and medical procedures for billing, record-keeping, and epidemiological tracking. ICD-9 was the older revision used in the U.S. until 2015, when it was replaced by the more detailed ICD-10, which contains tens of thousands of codes. Medical coders, billers, and health information management professionals use this skill to translate clinical documentation into codes for insurance claims and healthcare statistics.
