A firewall is a network security device or software that monitors and controls incoming and outgoing traffic based on predetermined security rules, acting as a barrier between trusted internal networks and untrusted external ones like the internet. IT and security professionals configure firewalls (hardware appliances like those from Cisco or Palo Alto, or software-based like iptables) to block unauthorized access while permitting legitimate communication. They are a foundational component of network security and compliance in nearly every organization.
