Audio compression refers to two related concepts: dynamic range compression, which reduces the volume difference between the loudest and quietest parts of a recording to create a more consistent sound, and file compression, which reduces audio file size (e.g., converting WAV to MP3) using codecs. Audio engineers use dynamic compression during mixing and mastering to make vocals or instruments sit better in a mix and sound more polished on various playback systems. File compression skills are useful for optimizing audio for streaming, podcasts, or web delivery.
