Originally an 1850 licorice-extract and chocolate distributor, it was acquired by Perelman in 1980 and grown into a diversified conglomerate that has held interests in companies spanning cosmetics, entertainment, defense, and biotechnology, including Revlon, AM General, and SIGA Technologies.
