Barnes & Noble is the largest chain of retail bookstores in the United States, operating roughly 600-700 stores nationwide along with the BN.com e-commerce site and the Nook e-reader/digital platform. Founded in its modern form in 1971 by Leonard Riggio, it was acquired by hedge fund Elliott Management (also owner of UK chain Waterstones) in 2019.
