A&W Restaurants is an American fast food chain known for its root beer, root beer floats, and 'Burger Family' combo meals, founded in 1919 in Lodi, California. Formerly owned by Yum! Brands, the chain was sold in 2011 to a consortium of franchisees operating as A Great American Brand, LLC, and now has roughly 900 locations across the U.S. and several other countries (A&W Canada is a separate, unaffiliated company).
