Ultrasound Technologist
Ultrasound technologists, also called sonographers, use sound-wave imaging to visualize organs, tissues, and developing fetuses, working closely with physicians in hospitals, OB/GYN offices, and diagnostic imaging centers. Their core skill is ultrasound imaging technique, often supplemented by Doppler imaging to assess blood flow, all grounded in strong anatomy knowledge to identify normal versus abnormal findings. Direct, empathetic patient care matters greatly given sensitive exams, and results are archived through PACS systems.
Duties & responsibilities
- Acquire diagnostic ultrasound images of organs, tissues, and anatomical structures using specialized equipment
- Perform Doppler imaging to assess blood flow and vascular conditions
- Document findings and communicate results to physicians for clinical interpretation
- Prepare patients for exams, explain procedures, and provide support during imaging
- Maintain patient records and archive imaging data through PACS or electronic systems
- Position patients appropriately and use anatomical knowledge to identify normal and abnormal findings
- Rotate between clinical locations and adapt to different departmental workflows
