This senior role owns the mobile engineering for a newly acquired VPN app with 10M+ installs across Android and iOS, managing everything from the native app layers through custom Go networking libraries and platform VPN APIs. You'll inherit an existing codebase, improve it to Mode's standards, stabilize the product, and ship user-facing improvements in a fast-moving, ownership-heavy position.

5+ years professional senior mobile engineering experience in agile environments shipping native Android and iOS apps to production
Production experience with Android: Kotlin, Java, Jetpack Compose, XML views, Coroutines, Flow, Koin, Dagger/Hilt, Retrofit, Room, WorkManager, foreground services
Production experience with iOS: Swift, UIKit, SwiftUI, Swift Concurrency, RxSwift, RxCocoa, Combine, Core Data, Keychain
Hands-on platform networking and VPN APIs: VpnService, NetworkExtension, Packet Tunnel Provider, always-on VPN, kill switch, split tunneling, native library integration
GitHub version control and pull-request based workflows
SOLID, Clean Coding, Testing, with automation experience (Espresso, UI Automator, XCTest, XCUITest)
Publishing and maintaining apps on Google Play and Apple App Store with VPN app compliance and review handling
Working knowledge of VPN protocols and networking: WireGuard, OpenVPN, Shadowsocks, TCP/IP, DNS, TLS
Experience with subscription and in-app purchase flows (StoreKit 2, Google Play Billing, RevenueCat) and analytics integration
Daily use of AI agents (Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot) for code and review with strong judgment on verification
Candid and empathetic communication with ability to lead independently and know when to collaborate
Experience building large-scale consumer apps with technical leadership skills
Passionate about technology and staying current with advancements and best practices

Nice to have

Help transition existing mobile codebases from acquired team and bring apps to Mode's engineering standards
Experience shipping or maintaining consumer VPN, proxy, or privacy products, especially censorship-circumvention and traffic obfuscation tools
Experience with TunnelKit, OpenVPNAdapter, wireguard-apple, wireguard-android, gomobile libraries, or userspace network stacks
Reading or writing Go
React and TypeScript experience for website, account portal, and landing pages
Kotlin Multiplatform or other cross-app logic sharing approaches
CI/CD tools: GitHub Actions, Fastlane, Bitrise, Xcode Cloud, pipeline setup
Firebase Crashlytics, Remote Config, A/B testing, feature flags
