What this role is

This role owns the infrastructure and frameworks that enable Anthropic's reinforcement learning research to move faster, designing APIs and systems that researchers build upon while keeping production runs reliable and maintainable. You'll embed with research teams to understand their needs, build abstractions that prevent whole classes of errors, and mentor others in adopting your designs.

Required

Deep expertise in Python including static typing and safe async/concurrency patterns
Strong taste in API and framework design with a track record of engineers adopting your frameworks
Experience designing or operating stateful concurrent or distributed systems with careful reasoning about failure and consistency
A habit of verification through measurement and building correctness checks
Ability to work productively in large, evolving, or research-style codebases you didn't originally write
Strong communication with collaborators of varied backgrounds and comfort with ambiguity and self-scoping work

Nice to have

Experience building infrastructure or frameworks for machine learning research or RL workflows
Experience building agent frameworks, orchestration engines, or multi-agent systems with checkpoint/restore and recovery
Experience using AI coding tools on correctness-critical code with good judgment about verification
Experience building client libraries or SDKs on sandboxed or remote execution platforms
Experience with large-scale data processing and dataset lifecycle management
Experience designing serialization schemes or extensible plugin systems across organizations
Prior experience embedding with teams, handing off systems, or defining code standards adopted widely
