Shatranj

Shatranj is the ancient Persian and later Arabic strategy board game that served as the direct ancestor of modern chess, itself derived from the Indian game chaturanga. Played on an 8x8 board with pieces such as the shah (king), firzan (counselor), and pieces resembling elephants and chariots, it spread through the medieval Islamic world into Europe, where its rules gradually evolved into today's chess.
