Chu Shogi

Chu shogi is a large variant of Japanese chess (shogi) played on a 12x12 board with 46 pieces per side, including several piece types not found in standard shogi, such as the lion and kirin, which have unique multi-step movement abilities. It flourished in Japan from the medieval period through the Edo era before being largely supplanted in popularity by the smaller, faster standard shogi. Today it is kept alive by a small community of enthusiasts drawn to its greater strategic complexity and historical richness.
