Software design documents (SDDs) are formal technical documents that describe a software system's architecture, components, data models, interfaces, and design decisions before or during development. Engineers and technical leads write SDDs to communicate design intent to stakeholders, facilitate code reviews, and serve as a reference for future maintenance. They are common in enterprise and regulated software development environments requiring traceability.
