A snowflake schema is a data warehouse design in which dimension tables are normalized into multiple related tables rather than kept as single flat tables, forming a structure that resembles a snowflake when diagrammed. It contrasts with the simpler star schema and is used by data architects and analysts to reduce data redundancy at the cost of more complex joins in queries.
