A routing protocol is a set of rules that routers use to communicate network topology information and determine the best paths for forwarding data packets across a network. Common examples include OSPF, BGP, EIGRP, and RIP, each suited to different network sizes and purposes (interior vs. exterior routing). Network engineers configure and troubleshoot these protocols to ensure efficient, reliable data delivery across enterprise networks and the internet.
