Human development is a field of study and policy focused on expanding people's capabilities, freedoms, and quality of life, going beyond pure economic metrics to include health, education, and social wellbeing -- exemplified by the UN's Human Development Index. It also refers to the psychological and physiological process by which individuals grow and change across the lifespan, from infancy through old age. Professionals in international development, psychology, and public policy use human development frameworks to design programs and measure societal progress.
