Haitian Creole Language

Languages

Haitian Creole (Kreyòl Ayisyen) is a French-based creole language spoken by nearly all of Haiti's population and by Haitian diaspora communities, notably in the United States. It developed from contact between French colonizers and enslaved West African peoples in the 17th and 18th centuries, has its own standardized orthography, and is one of Haiti's two official languages alongside French.
