Cloning a GitHub repository means creating a full local copy of a remote repository, including its entire commit history and branches, using the 'git clone' command. Developers do this to get a working copy of a project on their own machine so they can make changes, run the code, or contribute to it. It's typically the first step when starting to work with an existing codebase hosted on GitHub.
