A GitHub branch is a parallel version of a repository's codebase that allows developers to work on new features, bug fixes, or experiments without affecting the main (often called 'main' or 'master') codebase. Once changes on a branch are complete and reviewed, they are typically merged back via a pull request. Branching is central to collaborative software development, enabling multiple people to work simultaneously without conflicts.
