Functional Specification

Software Development and Engineering Practices

A functional specification is a formal document that describes in detail how a software system or feature should work from an external, user-facing perspective, including inputs, outputs, workflows, and business rules. Product managers, business analysts, and technical writers create these to align stakeholders and give developers a clear reference before implementation begins. It typically follows requirements gathering and precedes technical or design specifications.
