Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT)
Business and Management
Electronic Benefits Transfer is a system used in the United States that allows recipients of government assistance programs, such as SNAP (food stamps) and TANF, to access benefits via a magnetic-stripe card similar to a debit card. It replaced paper food stamps and checks, enabling recipients to make purchases at authorized retailers and ATMs. State and federal agencies administer EBT systems, and retailers must have compatible point-of-sale equipment to accept them.
