Dowsing is a practice, sometimes called "water witching," in which practitioners use tools like forked sticks or L-shaped rods to purportedly locate underground water, minerals, or other hidden objects. The rods or sticks are believed to move in response to what's being sought, though scientific studies have found no evidence supporting its effectiveness beyond chance and unconscious muscle movements (the ideomotor effect). It remains a niche folk practice and hobby for some people interested in alternative or esoteric methods.
