Cel Shading

3D, Animation and Game Development

Cel shading (or toon shading) is a non-photorealistic rendering technique used in animation and video games that gives 3D models a flat, hand-drawn, cartoon-like appearance using bold outlines and limited color gradients instead of smooth shading. It's used by animators and game developers in titles like "Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker" and "Borderlands" to evoke a comic-book or animated aesthetic. Artists and technical artists implement it through custom shaders in game engines like Unity or Unreal.
