Yoruba is a tonal language spoken by tens of millions of people, primarily the Yoruba ethnic group in southwestern Nigeria, as well as in Benin, Togo, and diaspora communities in the Americas shaped by the Atlantic slave trade. It belongs to the Niger-Congo language family and uses a Latin-based alphabet with diacritical marks to indicate tone. Knowledge of Yoruba is valuable for careers in translation, cultural consulting, media, and community work serving Yoruba-speaking populations in West Africa and abroad.
