VMware ESX was an early bare-metal (type-1) hypervisor product from VMware that allowed multiple virtual machines to run directly on physical server hardware without a separate host operating system. Enterprise IT administrators used ESX servers to consolidate physical servers and improve data center efficiency. It was eventually succeeded by the more lightweight ESXi architecture, which removed the Service Console.
