Urdu is an Indo-Aryan language written in a Perso-Arabic script, serving as the national language of Pakistan and one of the officially recognized languages of India. It is closely related to Hindi in grammar and everyday vocabulary but draws more heavily on Persian, Arabic, and Turkic loanwords, and has a rich literary tradition especially in poetry (ghazals and nazms). It is spoken by tens of millions of people as a first language and by many more as a second language across South Asia and diaspora communities worldwide.
