Tool calling (or function calling) is a capability of large language models that lets them invoke external functions, APIs, or software tools to retrieve information or perform actions beyond generating text. AI engineers use it to build agents that can search the web, query databases, run code, or control applications, with the model deciding which tool to call and with what arguments.
