SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and its successor TLS (Transport Layer Security) are cryptographic protocols that secure data transmitted over computer networks, most commonly between web browsers and servers. IT professionals and developers implement SSL/TLS certificates to encrypt sensitive information like passwords and payment details and to verify the identity of websites (indicated by HTTPS).
