Research design is the overall strategy or blueprint a researcher chooses to integrate the components of a study, including the type of study (experimental, observational, qualitative, etc.), sampling approach, and data collection methods, in order to answer a research question validly. Academics and applied researchers select a research design early on to ensure their conclusions will be methodologically sound.
