A put option is a financial derivatives contract that gives its holder the right, but not the obligation, to sell an underlying asset at a specified strike price before or at expiration. Traders and investors use put options for hedging against declines in asset value or for speculating on falling prices, and they are commonly traded by finance professionals, portfolio managers, and individual investors.
