The project management life cycle describes the standard sequence of phases a project passes through: initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and controlling, and closing. Each phase has defined activities and deliverables, such as chartering the project in initiation or conducting lessons-learned reviews at closing. Project managers use this structure to organize work, set expectations, and ensure consistent governance from start to finish.
